About Kath Bertrand

IMG_0889.HEIC

Kath Bertrand  is interested  in the narrative  she creates between  her painting and ceramics, exploring a sense of place with landscape and the connection to self.

She aims to tell stories about her life, womens stories and surroundings through creative imaginings and journeys about nostalgia, memory and natural places especially rainforest in the QLD hinterland, central Australian desert and the coast. Where she lives in Moreton Bay she is inspired by mangroves, natural vegetation and eucalypts and paperbarks along the coastal fringe.

She enjoys creating ceramic forms that feel familiar such as teapots and cups that elicit memories of an earlier era.

Surface decoration is important and will often include wildflowers, trees, images of girls and older women swimming or with a dog,or singing.

Kath displays a semi abstract approach that uses the layering of watercolour, acrylic and ink, that can be both expressive and detailed on paper, board and canvas. Ceramics are handbuilt or slipcast usually with white stoneware or porcelain.

Kath is influenced by artists such as Matisse, William Robinson, and Elisabeth Cummings. She also is influenced by ceramic artists such as Helen Fuller, Carole Epp and Shannon Garson
